"Which platform is better?" is the wrong question. The right one is: which platform fits your stage, your product category and the way you actually make content?
Shopee and TikTok Shop are fighting for Thai creators. Shopee leans on higher commission and campaign bonuses. TikTok leans on organic reach and short-video commerce where people buy without leaving the app. Many creators run both at once and get mediocre results from each.
Commission: the ceiling is not the floor
Shopee Live and Affiliate
- Live: up to about 10 percent
- General affiliate links and codes: roughly 5 to 7 percent
- Brand-selected special commission: up to about 12 percent
- Campaign days (5.5, 6.6, 7.7, 9.9 and so on) add bonuses
TikTok Shop Affiliate and Live
- General affiliate: roughly 5 to 15 percent, depending on category and brand
- Live: GMV-based, plus the normal affiliate rate
- Open collaboration: you apply at the rate the brand sets
- Targeted collaboration: the brand picks you, and rates can be higher
The top numbers (10, 12 and 15 percent) are ceilings that usually require brand selection, a specific program or minimum monthly sales. New creators typically start near the base rate. A high rate on a product that does not convert earns less than a modest rate on one that sells.
Account health on TikTok
TikTok uses an internal health measure, the Content Health Rate (CHR), that affects access to many affiliate and live features. A low score can block collaboration plans, limit Live Shopping reach and exclude you from incentives. Even minor community-guideline violations can lower it. If you are serious about TikTok Shop, managing account health is part of the job. (We cover this in detail in our CHR guide.)
Other differences that matter
- Start-up cost: Gear is similar (phone, ring light at roughly 500 to 1,500 baht, microphone, backdrop). TikTok demands more short-video production time. Shopee Live rewards a natural, unpolished style.
- Reach: TikTok wins on organic discovery, so a new account can be seen without followers. Shopee Live viewers are often intent buyers who convert more easily, but you have to bring them in through followers or Shopee Ads.
- Rules: On Shopee, avoid discussing competitors' prices, redirecting traffic off-platform or using bots. On TikTok, avoid misleading claims (especially in health and beauty) and link products through TikTok Shop during Live Shopping.
- Analytics: Both give GMV, conversion and commission dashboards. TikTok is more granular on content performance and closer to real time.
What sells where
- Shopee Live fits: FMCG, repeat-purchase beauty and skincare, low to mid-price items, local brands with Shopee exclusives, food.
- TikTok Shop fits: discovery products ("you have to see it to want it"), fashion and footwear, light gadgets, wellness with a strong story, anything with viral potential.
Where to start
| Your stage | Suggested approach |
|---|---|
| Beginner (0 to 3 months, under 1,000 followers) | Start on TikTok Shop. Organic reach helps. Apply to Affiliate, pick a category you know, post 3 to 5 short videos a week, watch your CHR. |
| Intermediate (3 to 12 months, 1,000 to 50,000) | TikTok as primary, Shopee as secondary. Add Shopee links for products with high brand commission (10 to 12 percent). |
| Experienced (12+ months, 50,000+, steady sales) | Diversify and negotiate directly. Build a media kit with real GMV and conversion data. Talk to brand managers or an MCN. |
My take
- Top earners rarely rely on one platform. They choose a primary one they are genuinely good at and treat the other as passive income.
- TikTok's organic reach is an advantage available right now. Use it before the algorithm changes.
- Shopee Live's intent-driven viewers can out-convert TikTok Live in some categories, if you can get them into the room.
- If you are short on time, master one platform instead of doing two halfway.
Rates and policies change, and the Thai live-commerce market is still growing, so check each platform's current terms before you commit.
